Our trips

The Journey Continues...

With our trips to Israel on hold, we decided that instead of bringing American film students and professionals to Israel, we would bring some young Israeli student filmmakers to the US! In September, we did just that! In conjunction with the Jewish Studies Department at the University of Georgia, we brought 4 recent grads (and the director), from the Ma'aleh School of Film to UGA for a screening of 5 Ma'aleh films and 2 days of visiting film, literature and Hebrew classes and meeting with students, faculty and staff.

On our visit to an MFA film class at Athena Studios, the Ma'aleh grads and the UGA grads shared clips of their films and had an excellent discussion about these films in particular and filmmaking in general. After class, we got a tour of Athena Studios, and the students had still more opportunity to talk with each other about their craft.

We were hosted for a lovely and lively lunch by the Dean of the Grady College of Journalism and the Head of Grady's Department of Entertainment and Media Studies, where among other things, Greek life and college football, two things which don't exist at Israeli schools, were entertainingly explained, and it's safe to say, as you'll see in the photos, the Israelis are all now loyal Dawgs!

It was the first visit to Georgia for all the Israelis, and the first visit to the US for two of them! Everyone was impressed by the size and beauty of UGA's campus and its antebellum buildings, and by Athens itself. Most importantly, the Israeli filmmakers were impressed by the talent, knowledge and friendliness of the students, faculty and staff we met at UGA. We also greatly appreciated the home hospitality shown us by some local Athenians.

Then we headed to the Washington DC area, where we visited the National Mall and toured some of the local sites, like Great Falls on the Potomac River.  We finished up with a program on student filmmaking in Israel at a local synagogue. We look forward to future programs and trips with Israeli filmmakers and composers!

The Trip of a Lifetime

Every backStorygroup trip is different in terms of participants and schedule, but each group visits some of the same beautiful cities and sites in Israel to experience the diversity of the nation.

When we founded the The backStorygroup in 2015, our mission was primarily in taking film & film music students and professionals on cultural trips to Israel. Before Covid, we had four amazing trips, each different in terms of participants and itinerary, but all structured to allow our participants to meet their peers in the film and music fields, as well as interesting people in science and technology, and to experience the culture and diversity of the nation. Our activities have included our participants making a film at the Rimon School of Music (watch it here!) with Israeli music students, attending the Keshet Media Group's Innovative TV Conference in Jerusalem, where we had the opportunity to go to panels and network with industry leaders, and as we always to, visiting film and music schools, where our professionals give lectures or master classes.

Each backStorygroup trip also involves exploring some of the most amazing ancient sites in the world, such as the Old City of Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, and Jaffa. We make sure to arrange some downtime too, especially in Tel Aviv, to allow everyone to enjoy  the beach and the city by night.

Although our trips to Israel are on hold for now, we are anticipating that we'll be able to start them up again soon!

Don't Miss Out

Our trips differ year-to-year, but The backStorygroup works to maintain a high quality of education, exposure, and experience across our various groups. Each trip is tailored to meet the needs of the individuals on the trip and allow participants some independence in choosing how to spend their time in Israel. There’s something for everyone in Israel, and we’d love for you to experience it with us.
